About Bertie County Schools
The Bertie County School District in rural Eastern North Carolina has become a key partner in Project H's Design For Education initiative. In March 2009, Bertie County's Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Chip Zullinger and Mr. Kenneth Perry, approached Project H with interest in our Learning Landscape playgrounds. In April 2009, four Learning Landscapes were built at each of Bertie's four elementary schools. Since then, the teachers at the Bertie elementary schools have been instrumental in providing feedback and improving the Learning Landscape games and system.
Following this first project, Project H and Bertie County Schools have continued the partnership, undertaking Design For Education initiatives including the renovation and reimagination of two computer labs at the Early College Prep Academy, which can be seen in the video here. In this new design scheme, computer stations surround vertical "tower pods" that allow all electrical to be channeled up into the ceiling, leaving the space open and free of potential hazards. The "pod" scheme also creates a more social environment, and orients the room towards interactive whiteboards for more focused instruction.
Project H's partnership with Bertie County is an ongoing initiative, which may result in a more long-term "Studio H" design/build program within their Early College campus. The partnership represents Project H's focus on Design For Education, as our teams of designers begin to establish best practices for and bring innovation to the educational experiences of teachers, students, and administrators.
