    The Mexico City team is developing the Furniture for Rural Schools project through a partnership with Lazos IAP, a non-profit organization focused on improving the infrastructure and learning quality of Mexican rural education. The Mexico City team is focused on the repair and improvement of school furniture, and has started working with primary school “Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta” located the rural town of Chimalhuacán as the pilot school for this program.

    The first part of the project consisted in identifying the specific needs of the pilot school through a series of field research visits and on-site interviews with the school director, teachers and students. The team found out that the school had a lot of old broken furniture pieces that were not in use but still stored.

    Then, the team conducted a Repair Brigade to re-utilize the structures of 32 desks and to create new table tops. The brigade was executed over the course of 2 weekends involving the community members (teachers, parents and event some kids that wanted to participate). The collaboration of teachers and parents in the assembly and repair process allowed them to engage actively in the creation and improvement of their own academic environment, and learn the tools for continuous maintenance. The brigade was very successful, with over 30 people participated resulting in 32 new tables ready for use (enough for 2 classrooms).

    The team will continue designing new pieces for the pilot and other schools, and will also run more brigades to continue reusing some of the other broken furniture pieces.
